There seems to be one critical piece of information missing: When will this be distributed through the Visual Studio Installer. The current release notes do not mention anything about that: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releases/2026/release-notes So when will this be available, so that we can stop using the extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace? |

Hello Windows App SDK Community,
The Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools for VS (Visual Studio) 2022-26 extension will no longer receive updates through the Visual Studio Marketplace.
What Is the Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools Extension?
The Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools extension enables developers to deploy and debug single-project packaged apps in Visual Studio.
If you have created a single-project packaged app, either independently or using the WinUI Blank App (Packaged) template, you have used this extension.
Today, the extension is primarily delivered through these Visual Studio Installer components:
The extension has also been available through the Visual Studio Marketplace.
What Is Changing?
The Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools for VS 2022-26 extension will no longer receive updates through the Visual Studio Marketplace. The Marketplace listing will remain available, but the next VSIX update and all future updates will only be published through the Visual Studio Installer. The next update to the Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools extension is expected in Visual Studio 2026 18.12 Insiders 1.
The Marketplace version will continue to work in Visual Studio, but it is frozen at its current version and will not receive future updates. The extension will continue to ship and receive updates through the Visual Studio Installer.
What Do I Need to Do?
We recommend switching to the Visual Studio Installer-managed version of the extension. It is the long-term supported path and will continue to receive updates; the Marketplace version will not.
You do not need to take action if the extension is already installed through a Visual Studio Installer component. If you installed only the Marketplace version, it will continue to work at its current version, but it will not receive the next or any future updates. To receive updates through the Visual Studio Installer, install one of the following components:
Marketplace extensions are managed through Extension Manager, while extensions installed with Visual Studio are managed as part of the Visual Studio installation (Microsoft Learn). When a Visual Studio Installer update installs the extension next, Visual Studio automatically uses the Installer-managed version in place of the Marketplace version; you do not need to uninstall the Marketplace copy first.
Each Visual Studio 2026 update includes the latest version of the Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools for VS 2022-26 automatically. If you have neither a listed component nor the Marketplace version installed, extension functionality such as F5 deployment for packaged apps will not be available until you install one of the listed components. The Marketplace listing remains installable and will still work, but since it is frozen at its current version and won't receive future updates, we recommend installing through the Visual Studio Installer instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is This Changing?
We initially published the Single-project Packaging Tools in the Marketplace before making them easier to install through the Visual Studio Installer.
Having two installation methods for the same extension can cause conflicts when multiple instances of Visual Studio update.
Will I Lose My Debug and Deployment Settings?
No. The extension's settings are not stored inside the extension itself.
Uninstalling, reinstalling, or moving to the component-managed version will not affect your settings. They are stored with your project in files such as:
.csprojor.vcxproj.csproj.userProperties\launchSettings.jsonThis change does not affect project files, build behavior, deployment, or debugging.
Where Can I Get Help or Provide Feedback?
Please file an issue in the Windows App SDK GitHub repository.
How Do I Remove the Marketplace Extension?
Removing the Marketplace version is optional; you can keep using it alongside the component-managed version. You may uninstall it to free storage on your machine.
In Visual Studio, select Extensions > Manage Extensions > Installed.
Select Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools for VS 2022-26 and click Uninstall.
If Visual Studio Installer must open, click OK.
In Visual Studio Installer, review the proposed changes and click Modify.
Depending on your installation, removing this component might also deselect workloads that include or depend on it, such as the WinUI or .NET workloads. Note any workloads or components being removed so you can restore them after the removal.
After the modification completes, reopen Visual Studio.
Return to Extensions > Manage Extensions > Installed and select Single-project MSIX Packaging Tools for VS 2022-26 again.
The remaining entry should now be the Marketplace-installed extension.
Click Uninstall and complete the removal in the VSIX Installer.
If removal is blocked, disable or remove the dependent extensions identified in the error message.
Open Visual Studio Installer, click Modify for the affected Visual Studio instance, and reselect any workloads or components removed earlier.
Keep the setup-managed extension current by updating Visual Studio through either:
