What:

Add repeatable --evidence and --evidence-key predicateURI=publicKeyFile options. During snapshot validation, ec verifies filesystem attestations, matches their signed subject digests to each image, and includes them alongside OCI attestations in the image’s input.attestations.

The POC includes Cosign-signed CHI evidence and a policy rule that rejects CRITICAL advisories after their attested safe_until date.

From the repository root, with Go, Cosign, crane, and jq installed:

./hack/evidence-poc/setup-golden.sh sha256:9dc171a302d42292a6094d8d9a106048547ad56cde7860b565fc5a2116499d36

./dist/ec validate image \
  --images hack/evidence-poc/generated/snapshot.json \
  --policy hack/evidence-poc/policy.yaml \
  --evidence hack/evidence-poc/generated/chi-attestations.json \
  --evidence-key "https://example.invalid/chi/v1=hack/evidence-poc/generated/chi.pub" \
  --ignore-rekor --effective-time now --vsa-expiration=0 \
  --output json=hack/evidence-poc/generated/report.json

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds verified OCI and filesystem attestation sources to image validation. The image command accepts local evidence bundles and keys, and a proof of concept demonstrates evidence matching and CHI policy checks.

Changes: Image Evidence Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Evidence contract and filesystem verification
internal/evidence/source.go, internal/evidence/json.go, internal/evidence/filesystem.go, internal/evidence/filesystem_test.go
Adds a source interface and filesystem bundle loading. The loader validates JSON structure, statement fields, digest formats, and signatures against predicate-specific trusted keys.
OCI evidence collection
internal/evidence/oci.go, internal/evidence/oci_test.go
Adds OCI referrer and legacy-tag collection. The source verifies collected attestations against the image digest and excludes image-signature predicates.
Attestation sources in image validation
internal/image/validate.go, internal/image/validate_test.go, internal/evaluation_target/application_snapshot_image/*
Adds attestation sources to validation options and snapshot image creation. Validation collects records by image digest; source-backed validation skips the VSA check.
CLI evidence options and validation wiring
cmd/validate/image.go, cmd/validate/image_test.go, cmd/validate/image_integration_test.go, cmd/validate/vsa.go
Adds repeatable --evidence and --evidence-key flags, validates option combinations, creates OCI and filesystem sources, and passes validation options through the command.
CHI policy and policy-input checks
hack/evidence-poc/policy/*, hack/evidence-poc/probes/*, hack/evidence-poc/chi-predicate.json, hack/evidence-poc/tests/*
Adds CHI release-gate and format rules, policy helpers, sample advisory data, and tests for deadline boundaries, coverage, and malformed evidence.
Proof-of-concept setup and validation workflow
hack/evidence-poc/registry/*, hack/evidence-poc/setup*.sh, hack/evidence-poc/validate.sh, hack/evidence-poc/check*.sh, hack/evidence-poc/README.md, hack/evidence-poc/.gitignore
Adds local registry and evidence setup scripts, checks for valid and invalid evidence cases, policy-input comparisons across evaluators, and usage documentation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Replace the developer-specific absolute policy path.

Line 30 points to /Users/jstuart/scratch_pad/.... The CHI source fails to load on any other checkout. Then validate.sh and setup-golden.sh (which copies this file) break for every other user. Use a path that validate.sh resolves at runtime. One option: keep a template and substitute $demo/policy in setup-golden.sh. Another option: use a path relative to the repository root.

Risk Assessment: moderate (2/5)

Details

Large feature PR (29 files, 2227 lines, change-size composite 5) introduces entirely new Cosign-signed filesystem evidence verification capability, but no protected paths, no security-sensitive path flags, no CI or dependency changes, adequate test coverage (ratio 0.21), and an established contributor drive all other Tier 1 dimensions to 1-2; Tier 2 is suppressed by the majority of files being new with no churn history, yielding composite 0.621.875 + 0.381.0 = 1.54, rounded to 2 (moderate).

Findings

High

  • [code-organization] hack/evidence-poc/policy.yaml:30 — Line 30 commits a hardcoded absolute path to a developer's local machine (/Users/jstuart/scratch_pad/ec-cli-evidence-poc/hack/evidence-poc/policy), making the file non-functional for any other user or CI environment. All other hack/ scripts derive paths from BASH_SOURCE or $root; a committed static config file must not encode a machine-specific path. Compounding this, hack/evidence-poc/README.md lines 8-10 contain stale developer-workstation metadata ("The worktree is /Users/jstuart/scratch_pad/...", "The original checkout is unchanged. Changes are uncommitted.") and line 28 instructs the reader to cd into that same absolute path, so the README that advertises the POC as reproducible points at paths that only exist on the author's laptop.
Remediation: Replace the absolute policy path with a repo-relative path that the policy loader can resolve (e.g. ./hack/evidence-poc/policy), or generate policy.yaml at runtime from setup.sh (which already produces generated/policy.yaml) and remove the static copy from version control. Separately, rewrite the README header and the cd example so they do not reference /Users/jstuart/scratch_pad.
