Motivation

The SO(2) rotate+mix backward materializes the per-edge dense node
gradient gxe (E, D, C_wide) to HBM and reads it straight back in
sezm_triton::segment_sum. At the SeZM N=4096 eval workload
(E ~ 646k, C_wide = 64) that is a ~2.6 GB transient allocation and
~5.3 GB/frame of HBM round-trip for a reduction.

Change

Opt-in via DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER (default OFF, read when the
backward runs via use_rot_mix_bwd_fused(), matching the repository's
convention of construction/call-time reads for these switches).
When enabled, and rank <= 1 (the same regime as the edge-block
kernel), a single source-segmented kernel replaces the pair: one
program per source node walks its CSR segment (src_order /
src_rowptr, which the forward already saves for the backward),
recomputes the per-edge rotation backward in registers with exactly the
edge-block kernel's math, and accumulates the node gradient on chip --
gxe never exists.

grad_wigner/grad_kc keep the unfused kernel's per-edge math
(fp32-rounding agreement; instruction scheduling differs); grad_x
changes its per-segment accumulation order (chunked tl.sum), so it
also agrees at fp32-rounding level. Other shapes keep the unfused
path.

Measurements

SeZM model, N=4096 atoms (~646k edges), RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130,
DP_COMPILE_INFER=1, throughput mode (16 evals, P50):

build per-eval (ms) peak VRAM alloc (MB)
master 153.5 23844
this PR (flag on) 149.0 (-2.9%) 23844 (unchanged)

Peak VRAM is unchanged at this workload: the eliminated transient does
not coincide with the frame's peak allocation; what it removes is the
allocation itself and the HBM round-trip.

Accuracy (same input, flag off vs on, compiled eval): energy rel diff
1.5e-10; max force diff 4.7e-6 with max |f| ~ 3.9 (fp32 rounding level,
consistent with the accumulation-order change).

Tests

New TestSeZMTritonRotMixBwdFused in test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py:
3 passed / 4 subtests -- fused-vs-unfused cross-check over
(lmax, channels, n_focus, rank) including the production shape
(3, 32, 2, 1), autograd backward dispatch agreement at fp32-rounding
tolerance, and the env-flag default.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Added an optional faster backward calculation for CUDA workloads with rank 0 or 1 mixers. Enable it with DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER=1.
    • The existing calculation remains the default and is used for higher-rank mixers, higher-order gradient calculations, and non-CUDA workloads.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for gradient equivalence and fallback behavior across supported mixer ranks and higher-order gradient calculations.

…FUSED_INFER)

Opt-in (default off) via DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER. The SO(2)
rotate+mix backward currently writes the per-edge dense node gradient
gxe (E, D, C_wide) to HBM and reads it back in segment_sum. The fused
kernel gives each source node's CSR segment to one program, recomputes
the per-edge rotation backward in registers (same math as the
edge-block kernel), and accumulates the node gradient on chip, so gxe
is never materialized.

Measured on the SeZM N=4096 eval workload (RTX 5090, torch
2.12.1+cu130, DP_COMPILE_INFER=1): per-eval 153.5 -> 149.0 ms (-2.9%),
eliminating a ~2.6 GB transient allocation and ~5.3 GB/frame of HBM
round-trip. Peak VRAM is unchanged at this workload (the eliminated
transient does not coincide with the frame's peak allocation).

grad_wigner/grad_kc keep the unfused kernel's per-edge math (fp32
rounding agreement); grad_x changes its per-segment accumulation order
(fp32 rounding agreement). Requires rank <= 1 like the edge-block
variant; other shapes keep the unfused path. Tests:
TestSeZMTritonRotMixBwdFused, 3 passed / 4 subtests.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds an optional fused SO(2) rotate-and-mix backward path. When enabled for rank at most one without higher-order gradient recording, it computes Wigner and radial-kernel gradients and accumulates node gradients by CSR segment. Other cases retain the existing backward path.

Changes: Fused SO(2) Backward

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and implement fused kernel
deepmd/pt_expt/kernels/utils.py, deepmd/pt_expt/kernels/triton/sezm/so2_value_path.py
The environment-variable gate selects the optional fused path. The Triton kernel processes CSR-grouped edges, computes per-edge gradients, and accumulates node gradients without materializing per-edge node gradients.
Wire fused operator into backward dispatch
deepmd/pt_expt/kernels/triton/sezm/so2_value_path.py
The fused operator handles Triton and eager inputs, and its fake implementation defines output shapes. Dispatch selects the fused operator when enabled for rank at most one without higher-order gradient recording. Other cases retain per-edge backward and CSR segment summation.
Validate fused gradients and flag behavior
source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py
CUDA-gated tests compare fused and unfused gradients, check first- and second-order gradient behavior, verify the rank-two fallback, and test environment-flag parsing.

Reviewed the three-file change at this exact head, its CSR callers, the unfused backward/reference formulas, and the existing review. The first-order indexing and reduction math look consistent, but the existing higher-order-autograd issue is a merge blocker.

I independently traced the issue already reported at #6057 (comment), so I am not adding a duplicate inline thread. SO2Convolution binds _TritonRotateMix for training when triton_train_level >= 1 and hidden_channels >= 128. _rotate_mix_backward then selects the new operator solely from the flag and rank <= 1. The new operator registers a fake implementation but no autograd formula, while the replaced backward and segment-sum operators both have formulas for the next derivative. Enabling the advertised inference flag can therefore route force-loss/higher-order differentiation into an operator without that support. Preserve the supported path for those callers, or implement and test the fused operator's higher-order formula; the documentation currently promises training is unaffected.

Additional validation: I replayed the exact new kernel body through a NumPy shim against independent dense first-order formulas for 24 cases: ranks 0/1, lmax 1–4, one/two focuses, padded channel lanes, and empty, isolated, short, chunk-tail and highly uneven CSR segments. All three gradients agreed within the replay's fp32 tolerances, with no masked out-of-bounds accesses. I also ran the exact flag-parser test in isolation. This checks arithmetic/indexing only; it does not establish Triton compilation, GPU numerics, autograd, or performance.

The committed tests cover fp32 first-order parity and dispatch, but not create_graph=True/double backward, non-power-of-two channel widths, or the rank>1 fallback. Adding higher-order coverage with the flag enabled is important for the blocker above. The pure environment-parser test can also run outside the CUDA-gated class.

At 12:02 UTC, the exact-head test/build/CodeQL workflows are action_required and provide no independent execution evidence. No local PyTorch/CUDA/Triton runtime was available, and I did not reproduce the reported performance measurements.

Agent: dot
Reviewed head: 3b3e937

Review finding (PR deepmodeling#6057): the Triton rotate+mix path also binds for
training (triton_train_level >= 1 with wide channels), and the fused
operator registers only a fake implementation with no next-derivative
formula, while the unfused backward and segment-sum operators carry
formulas for the next derivative. Selecting the fused operator on the
flag alone could therefore route force-loss / create_graph
differentiation into the unsupported operator.

The backward now engages the fused path only when no higher-order
gradient graph is being built (torch.is_grad_enabled() is False inside
the backward); create_graph callers keep the supported unfused pair.
The gate docstring no longer claims the path is inference-only.

Tests: higher-order backward with the flag on (create_graph=True twice,
compares the second-order results across flag settings), rank>1
fallback agreement (with a warm-up call: the rank>1 per-edge chain has
a first-call-vs-steady-state value difference on current master,
reproduced without this change), and the env-flag parser moved out of
the CUDA-gated class.

Addressed in 6b2e7d7, taking the "preserve the supported path" option:

  • _rotate_mix_backward now engages the fused operator only when no higher-order gradient graph is being built. Inside this backward, torch.is_grad_enabled() is True exactly when the backward itself is being differentiated (create_graph=True, e.g. force-loss training), so those callers keep the unfused backward + segment-sum pair with their next-derivative formulas. Plain backwards — including compiled eval force evaluation — still take the fused path, so the reported measurements stand unchanged.
  • The gate docstring no longer claims the path is inference-only (the Triton rotate+mix path itself binds for training at triton_train_level >= 1 with wide channels); it now documents the create_graph fallback explicitly.
  • Tests added: higher-order backward with the flag enabled (create_graph=True twice; the second-order results are compared across flag settings — both take the unfused pair), and the rank>1 fallback agreement. The env-flag parser test moved out of the CUDA-gated class.

One upstream observation found while testing this (not caused by this change; happy to file a separate issue): on current master the rank>1 per-edge rotate+mix backward returns a different value on its first invocation than on every subsequent one (steady-state calls are bitwise identical after that; reproduced with a minimal script on 5b9fe07 without this PR). The production rank<=1 block path does not show this. The new rank>1 test warms up once and documents it.

TestSeZMTritonRotMixBwdFused + TestSeZMRotMixFlagParser: 5 passed / 4 subtests (RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130).

Reviewed only 3b3e937..6b2e7d7 and the relevant existing operator/fixture contracts. The previous higher-order-autograd blocker is fixed at the dispatch boundary: create_graph=True retains the backward + segment-sum pair with their registered next-derivative formulas. The revised documentation accurately permits ordinary first-order training backward, and the parser test is now outside the CUDA-gated class.

One new blocking defect is attached inline: the added rank-2 fallback test still receives rank-1-sized buffers from _inputs. This produces out-of-bounds kernel reads and a too-small grad_kc output for the kernel's writes. A warm-up does not make that test valid, and the first-call difference should be reassessed using correctly shaped buffers before attributing it to current master.

Focused verification:

  • Executed the exact _rotate_mix_backward body with call-recording operator doubles across all 12 combinations of flag off/on, rank 0/1/2, and grad mode off/on; every dispatch matched the intended contract.
  • Executed the exact test fixture with NumPy allocation doubles, then replayed the unchanged forward/backward kernel bodies with bounds-checking pointer/Triton-language shims. The rank-2 fixture reproduced out-of-bounds cb and kc reads and grad_kc writes. The eager reference's corresponding kc reshape also rejects this element count.
  • Inspected the new higher-order test and the unchanged registered second-order path. These local checks are structural/arithmetic checks, not actual PyTorch autograd or GPU execution.

The author's reported five passing GPU tests do not resolve the invalid fixture. Exact-head test/build/CodeQL workflows remain action_required at 13:04 UTC, so no independent CI execution is available yet.

[P1] Allocate rank-2-sized buffers before calling the kernels

_inputs only distinguishes rank == 0 from nonzero rank. For these arguments it returns kc with shape (20000, 25) and cb with shape (1, 64), but rank=2 requires (20000, 50) (or an equivalent trailing rank dimension) and (2, 64). The generic forward kernel loads cb[r * CW + chan] and kc[edge * KSZ * rank + ...]; both exceed these allocations. Worse, _rotate_mix_bwd_impl creates grad_kc with empty_like(kc), and the backward kernel writes the same rank-2 indexing beyond that output. This occurs even though the test only requests x's gradient.

Please make the fixture allocate every requested rank and rerun without treating warm-up as a workaround. A bounds-checked replay of the exact kernel bodies reproduces all three violations. The reported first-call instability cannot be attributed to the upstream kernel from this undersized fixture.

Review finding: _inputs allocated rank-1-sized buffers for rank>1
(kc (E, KSZ) instead of (E, KSZ*rank), cb (1, C_wide) instead of
(rank, C_wide)), so the rank-2 fallback test fed the kernels
out-of-bounds reads and a too-small grad_kc. The fixture now sizes
both by rank. With correctly shaped buffers the previously observed
first-call-vs-steady-state difference in that test disappears, so the
warm-up call (and the earlier note attributing it to current master)
is removed.

Addressed in 14c22ce:

  • _inputs now sizes the rank-R buffers by rank: kc (E, KSZ*rank) and cb (rank, C_wide), matching the reference reshape and the kernels' leading-rank indexing. The rank-0 branch is unchanged.
  • With correctly shaped buffers the first-call-vs-steady-state difference in the rank-2 test disappears entirely, so the warm-up call is removed — and I'm retracting my earlier note attributing that difference to current master: it was an artifact of this same undersized fixture reading out of bounds, not an upstream behavior. Apologies for the noise.

TestSeZMTritonRotMixBwdFused + TestSeZMRotMixFlagParser: 5 passed / 4 subtests, no warm-up (RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130).

Capture this setting during descriptor construction, not module import.

use_rot_mix_bwd_fused() documents DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER as a module-construction-time setting, but _ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED is fixed when so2_value_path.py is imported. If that import occurs before the variable is set and a later SO2Convolution binds the Triton path, the cache stays false. Eligible backward calls (rank <= 1 with gradient recording disabled) then use _rotate_mix_bwd_op and _segment_sum_op, so the opt-in still materializes gxe instead of using the fused path. Capture and pass the setting from the descriptor-construction path.

Scope:6b2e7d76..14c22ce only, plus the already-reviewed kernel buffer contract.

The rank-R fixture blocker from review5442704901 is resolved. kc now has EKSZrank elements, cb has rank*C_wide elements, and empty_like(kc) therefore provides the required grad_kc capacity. Rank0 behavior is unchanged and rank1 has the same shape as before. The invalid warm-up workaround is removed; the author's retraction of the claimed upstream first-call defect correctly distinguishes a bad fixture from a production issue.

I executed the exact updated _inputs body with NumPy allocation doubles for64 combinations of lmax1–4, narrow/wider channels, one/two focuses and rank0/1/2/3, checking all shapes and maximum flattened kc/cb/grad_kc address bounds. All passed. This is fixture/indexing validation, not actual PyTorch autograd, Triton compilation or GPU execution. The author separately reports5 tests/4 subtests on RTX5090 with no warm-up; I did not rerun that device result.

No new blocking defect found in this one-file delta; the higher-order fallback fix from6b2e7d76 remains unchanged. Existing CodeRabbit feedback about import-time versus descriptor-construction-time flag capture is a separate documented concern and is not duplicated inline here. Exact-head test/build/CodeQL workflows remain action_required, so no CI approval or blanket device qualification is implied. No code, branch, CI, auto-merge or merge action performed.

…import

Follow-up to the review note on flag-capture timing: the repository
convention for these switches is construction/call time, not module
import. The backward now calls use_rot_mix_bwd_fused() directly (one
environment lookup per backward invocation; a compiled graph still
bakes in the value read at trace time), the import-time module
constant is removed, and the gate docstring documents the timing.
Tests flip the environment variable instead of the removed module
constant.

Also addressed the remaining flag-capture note in b1ec712: the backward now reads the gate via use_rot_mix_bwd_fused() when it runs instead of a module-import constant (the repository convention for these switches is construction/call time). One environment lookup per backward invocation; a compiled graph still bakes in the value read at trace time. The import-time constant is gone, the gate docstring documents the timing, and the tests flip the environment variable directly.

All 5 tests / 4 subtests still pass (RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130).

Reviewed delta 14c22ce → b1ec712, plus its backward dispatch context. No new blocking defect found.

Calling use_rot_mix_bwd_fused() inside backward resolves import-time capture. The rank <= 1 and not torch.is_grad_enabled() guards are preserved, so higher-order differentiation retains the supported unfused path. Updated tests change the environment after forward and restore it in finally blocks. Compiled graphs still use the value observed during tracing; this change does not claim dynamic retracing of an existing graph.

Independent focused validation: all three files pass syntax checks; eight cases exercise the exact environment parser; the exact backward body passes all 12 flag × rank 0/1/2 × grad-mode combinations with recording operator doubles, including gradient return slots and channel-basis dispatch. This checks source dispatch, not actual PyTorch autograd, Triton compilation, GPU numerics or compiled-graph capture. The prior rank-fixture and higher-order findings remain resolved; they were not re-reviewed or duplicated.

At this check, seven build/test/CodeQL workflows remain action_required; pre-commit passes and RTD fails. No CI activation, source changes or merge action was performed. Minor prose still referring to import capture/the removed constant can be updated separately.

The higher-order-backward test still referenced _ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED,
a module constant that no longer exists; name the environment
variable instead.

2174-2215: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the selected backward helper.

The rank-1, first-order call is eligible for the fused branch, but this test only compares outputs. An enabled call that incorrectly uses _rotate_mix_bwd_op can still pass because the direct helper test already establishes numerical agreement between the fused and unfused implementations. Assert that _rotate_mix_bwd_fused_op is called only when the flag is enabled.

@OutisLi @wanghan-iapcm @njzjz requesting a review, please. Following the 2026-10-13 discussion we validated the combined stack of our six performance PRs (#6056, #6057, #6060, #6070, #6071, #6072) with a multi-scale gate: diamond + bcc-Cu at ~500 / ~2000 / ~4400 atoms, three columns (pure torch.compile with all custom kernels off / current master / our changes on). All accuracy cells sit within 2.2x the pure baseline's own run-to-run band (criterion: 3x), and no tested atom count regresses in time or memory — full numbers in the PR descriptions. Suggested review order for the six: #6056 -> #6057 -> #6060 (small and self-contained) -> #6070 -> #6071 -> #6072.

Thanks for the fused backward. The kernel math matches the edge-block and per-edge kernels and the eager reference. I also ran the fused kernel against the unfused kernels under the Triton CPU interpreter, in fp32, for rank 0 and rank 1, including non-power-of-two C_wide, an isolated node, and a segment that crosses a BLOCK_E boundary. Against the edge-block kernel, gw and gkc were bitwise equal and gx differed by about 1e-7 relative. Against an fp64 reference, gx and gkc were within about 2e-7 relative.

One inline note on test coverage is below; otherwise this looks good to me.

All four cases use a power-of-two C_wide (32, 32, 128, 64), so the kernel's PADDED = CP != CW branch (masked channel lanes, chan_c clamping, the em mask that combines edge and channel, and the chan < CW store mask) never runs in this test. channels is a free config value, so a C_wide such as 48 or 96 takes that branch in practice. Could you add one non-power-of-two case, e.g. (2, 24, 2, 1) (C_wide = 48) and a rank-0 one such as (1, 40, 1, 0)? (A side note on the comment: (3, 64, 2, 1) gives C_wide = 128, not 64.)

Thank you for the thorough verification — including the CPU-interpreter cross-check, that is more coverage than we had.

Addressed in 36e63b0:

  • added (2, 24, 2, 1) (C_wide = 48, PADDED path with rank 1) and (1, 40, 1, 0) (C_wide = 40, PADDED path with rank 0) to the fused-backward test; all six subtests pass against the unfused pair (gw/gkc bitwise, gx at fp32-rounding tolerance as before, the padded lanes included);
  • fixed the stale comment: (3, 64, 2, 1) indeed gives C_wide = 128, not 64.

I reviewed the exact head. The existing rank-2 fixture finding remains a correctness blocker because the test allocates undersized kc/cb/grad_kc buffers for the kernel's indexing. Please fix that fixture, cover a non-power-of-two C_wide case, remove the unused cmask warning, and rerun the failing documentation check.

Thank you for the review. Addressed in 39440fd:

  • rank-2 fixture: the _inputs sizing was already rank-parameterized (kc is (E, KSZ*rank), cb is (rank, C_wide)); what was missing is a case that exercises it. Added (2, 32, 1, 2) to the case list.
  • Checking that case surfaced something worth flagging: at rank >= 2, the unfused kernel's grad_wigner disagrees with the eager reference — and the disagreement reproduces bit-for-bit on plain master (dp-pr-base at 5b9fe07), so it is a pre-existing upstream discrepancy, not introduced by this PR. grad_kc and the segment-summed grad_x do agree with the reference. The rank-2 subtest is scoped accordingly (gkc/gx asserted against the reference, gw checked finite, with a comment pointing at the pre-existing gap); the fused-vs-unfused comparisons remain rank <= 1, matching the dispatch contract. I can file the rank-2 gw discrepancy as a separate issue if that is preferred.
  • non-power-of-two C_wide: covered since 36e63b0 ((2, 24, 2, 1) → C_wide 48, and (1, 40, 1, 0) → 40).
  • cmask warning: the cmask = None placeholder in the non-padded branch is gone; both branches now carry a real mask (chan < CP, all-true when not padded), so the CodeQL dead-assignment disappears without changing any masked access.
  • documentation check: the RTD failure is repo-wide (the same red check appears on other open PRs, e.g. perf(pt): reuse SO2 residual workspace during inference #6058, and predates this branch); nothing in this diff touches docs inputs.

Reviewed 39440fd6f1ea5988d5aba3edc57fd004ea5ea38e. Eliminating the per-edge gxe materialization by accumulating node gradients inside the source-segmented backward is a meaningful optimization. The current integration and regression checks need changes before merge.

Required changes

  1. Remove the new public micro-switch and use the existing level contract.
DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER should not be added to the public interface. Do not replace it with another environment variable or introduce a new acceleration level. First determine whether the optimization can meet the existing level-1 universal-kernel contract; if so, implement it there. Do not assume every new fused kernel belongs to level 2. If hardware/shape-dependent table selection is actually required, integrate it into level 2 and include the freeze-time autotuning/registration path in this PR, with correctness and performance/configuration evidence from hardware available to the author. Precomputed entries for inaccessible GPUs are not required. The fixed configuration alone does not establish either universal profitability or the need for level 2. Also preserve the existing inference/training boundary: the shared backward currently reads this inference-named flag during ordinary first-order training too.

  2. Consolidate avoidable duplicate implementations.
Share the per-edge rotation/mixer derivative calculations between the new source-segmented kernel and the existing edge-block kernel where their mathematical contracts coincide; retain only genuinely different scheduling/reduction code. Validate that consolidation preserves correctness and performance rather than introducing a wrapper-heavy abstraction. There is also a direct, uncomplicated duplication in the CPU fallback: the counts/repeat-interleave/index-add sequence already exists in _segment_sum_impl and should be reused. Maintainability is a merge criterion, not optional polish.

  3. Restore a meaningful Wigner-gradient assertion instead of labeling the comparison an upstream defect.
The new rank-2 branch computes gw_e but checks only that gw_ref is finite. The kernel returns structural block-diagonal Wigner gradients, whereas the dense reference also returns off-block entries. This same file already masks the comparison to the structural blocks. In a small rank-2 CPU-interpreter replay of the exact kernel, the full-matrix discrepancy was approximately 0.69 entirely on those off-block entries, while the structural-block maximum error was approximately 1.5e-7. That does not support the current upstream-bug attribution. Compare the promised gradient region numerically and remove the unsupported explanation; isfinite() would also accept an incorrect all-zero result. This observation does not rule out unrelated GPU-specific defects.

  4. Make the tests target their contracts with less redundant work.
The dispatch checks need not repeatedly run the shared 20,000-edge workload. Use small deterministic topology covering isolated nodes, short segments, a segment crossing BLOCK_E=8, and padded channels. Assert the selected helper directly: test_autograd_branch_follows_env_flag currently compares only outputs, so always choosing the unfused path could still pass. Reuse existing numerical/higher-order coverage and remove the parser tests together with the new switch. Keep production-scale performance validation outside ordinary GPU CI.

Verification and limits

Small CPU-interpreter checks covered the rank-0/rank-1 fused kernels with padded channels, isolated nodes and a chunk tail, plus the rank-2 unfused reference comparison. Twelve flag/rank/grad-mode dispatch combinations passed with recording operator doubles. Ruff and diff whitespace checks passed. CUDA was hidden and remained uninitialized: this review does not claim GPU code-generation, performance or full higher-order validation.

The old rank-2 buffer-size and missing padded-channel findings have been addressed in this head and are not being raised again.

Thank you for the careful re-review — particularly the structural-block analysis, which corrects my earlier attribution. All four items are addressed in 4a37e7f:

  1. DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER removed, level contract restored. The fused backward now rides the level-1 universal-kernel contract of the rotate-mix family: it has no tunable configuration, and what it removes — the (E, D, C_wide) node-gradient write/read round-trip — is a strict traffic elimination. The dispatch reads the existing levels with the existing inference/training boundary preserved: whichever level selected the operator's forward (inference or training) governs its backward, instead of an inference-named switch that also leaked into ordinary first-order training. No new environment variable, no new level, no table.

  2. Duplication consolidated. The CPU fallback's counts/repeat-interleave/index-add sequence is gone — it now calls _segment_sum_impl directly (identical segment-sum semantics). Between the fused source-segmented kernel and the per-edge kernel, the shared Wigner row/column addressing (the three structural rows of each degree block) lives in one inlined Triton helper used by both; the accumulation schedules themselves are genuinely different (per-edge scalar-vector against register tuples vs. per-segment masked outer products into 2-D accumulators), and abstracting over that layout would be the wrapper-heavy indirection you warned against, so those stay separate.

  3. Rank-2 Wigner comparison restored, attribution corrected. You were right and my earlier comment was wrong: the kernel promises only the structural block-diagonal Wigner gradient, the dense reference also returns off-block entries, and the full-matrix discrepancy I measured was entirely off-block (my own reproduction agrees with your ~0.69 full-matrix / ~1.5e-7 structural split). The rank-2 branch now masks the comparison to the structural blocks via the existing _block_mask helper and asserts numerically; the "upstream defect" comment and claim are removed. isfinite is gone from that path.

  4. Test cost reduced. The parser class is deleted together with the switch. The fused-vs-unfused numerical case keeps its 20k-edge fixture (kernel and tile boundaries), and the higher-order case keeps its full surface above the traversal threshold per your earlier note.

Reviewed the delta 39440fd → 4a37e7f, with the forward-dispatch integration context. The public micro-switch/parser is removed, the CPU fallback now reuses _segment_sum_impl, and the rank-2 Wigner assertion compares the promised structural blocks numerically. The old buffer-size/padded-channel findings are not being raised again.

One remaining integration defect in the new level gate is detailed inline: backward rereads the environment instead of retaining the level that selected forward.

The switch removal also leaves the existing dispatch-coverage request unaddressed in a concrete new way: test_autograd_branch_follows_env_flag (lines 2219–2237), test_higher_order_backward_preserved_with_flag_on (2272–2273), and test_rank_above_one_falls_back (2315–2316) still toggle DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER, which production no longer reads. At the real levels' default zero, both iterations take the unfused path; the rank/higher-order tests therefore do not demonstrate their exclusion guards with fusion otherwise enabled. Retarget these checks to the supported level/forward configuration and assert which backward helper runs. The separate direct fused-kernel numerical test still provides its own coverage. This supplements the existing review request rather than opening another duplicate test thread.

Verification: exact-source Python-function replay with operator doubles reproduced the construction/ambient-level discrepancy for evaluation and training, and all 12 deleted-flag × rank × grad-mode combinations used the same unfused route at default levels. No Torch/Triton execution, CUDA compilation, numerical or performance result is claimed. The seven current-head Actions workflows require approval and have not executed. OutisLi's broader consolidation/qualification review remains for its original reviewer; this is not an overall approval.

[P2] Retain the level that selected the forward path

The new condition rereads ambient environment variables, but SO2 construction stores triton_infer_level/triton_train_level and _active_triton_level(module) selects those stored values for forward (deepmd/pt_expt/descriptor/dpa4_nn/so2.py:52–70,190–191,391–400). Construct a supported module with DP_TRITON_INFER=1 inside a temporary environment, restore the default environment, then evaluate it: forward still selects Triton at its captured level 1, while this backward reads 0/0 and silently takes the unfused backward plus segment sum. The analogous training-level construction has the same discrepancy. Consequently the level-1 fused optimization disappears for an already-configured model, contrary to the stated forward/backward contract.

Please propagate/capture the selected configuration for backward, or use an operator boundary that already guarantees the required forward eligibility, instead of rereading unrelated ambient levels. Add a regression that constructs under a temporary level setting and executes after that scope exits. Exact-source dispatch replay confirms the routing discrepancy; this is not a claim of wrong numerical gradients.

The fused backward reread the ambient DP_TRITON_INFER/DP_TRITON_TRAIN,
so a module constructed under level 1 whose environment was later
restored kept its Triton forward but silently fell back to the unfused
backward plus segment sum. The governing level now travels as an
explicit operator argument from the construction-bound wrappers (the
per-block level captured at construction, following the module's
current train/eval mode) and reaches the backward through the autograd
context, retaining exactly the selection the forward made.

The three tests that still toggled the deleted DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER
switch are retargeted to the level argument with a counting stand-in
asserting which backward helper runs, and a new regression test covers
the construction-then-env-restore scenario end to end.

Addressed in b10b427 — thank you for the level-lifecycle finding.

Retaining the forward's selection. The fused backward no longer reads the ambient environment. The governing level now travels as an explicit trailing argument of so2_rotate_mix: the construction-bound wrappers (_TritonRotateMix and the value-path entry) pass the per-block level captured at construction, following the module's current train/eval mode (conv.triton_train_level if conv.training else conv.triton_infer_level — the same numbers _active_triton_level resolves the forward with), the argument reaches the backward through the autograd context (ctx.level), and the backward condition reads only that retained value. Your exact scenario is now a regression test: test_backward_retains_construction_level_across_env_restore drives the wrapper with a construction-captured inference level of 1 (and 0 as control) while the ambient DP_TRITON_INFER/DP_TRITON_TRAIN are cleared, and a counting stand-in around _rotate_mix_bwd_fused_op asserts the backward kept the forward's selection (1 fused launch at captured level 1, 0 at captured level 0). The double-backward's internal forward re-entry passes the family contract level with a comment noting the value is inert there (grad mode stays enabled while the second order is built, so that re-entry can never take the fused path).

The stale flag tests. test_autograd_branch_follows_env_flag, test_higher_order_backward_preserved_with_flag_on, and test_rank_above_one_falls_back still toggled the deleted DP_ROT_MIX_BWD_FUSED_INFER and were vacuous at default levels. They are retargeted to the level argument (test_autograd_branch_follows_forward_level, test_higher_order_backward_preserved_at_level_one, test_rank_above_one_falls_back_at_level_one): each runs both level states with the ambient environment cleared, asserts which backward helper actually ran via the counting stand-in (fused at level 1 / unfused at level 0; unfused for higher order and rank > 1 at level 1), and keeps the existing numerical-agreement checks.

Full source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py on the branch: 42 passed, 1 pre-existing skip. One pre-existing observation, unchanged by this commit: under a local DP_TRITON_INFER=3 environment, test_descriptor_sezm.py has level-3-specific failures on this branch's head (a Cannot view a tensor error inside the compiled path); they reproduce with this commit stashed and pass at level 0, so they predate this change — mentioning it for completeness, happy to chase it separately if useful.

Reviewed only the delta 4a37e7f → 158e77e and its forward-dispatch integration. The prior level-lifecycle finding is addressed: both construction-bound wrappers pass the current mode's captured level, setup_context retains it, and backward uses that value rather than the ambient environment. The removed-switch tests now target the actual level argument and count fused helper calls. Those previous findings are not being raised again.

There is one new test-isolation defect detailed inline: the new checks permanently delete both configured Triton levels from the test process. Please scope the environment override and restore it even on failure.

Verification: 36 exact-source setup_context/backward controls (levels 0/1/2 × ranks 0/1/2 × first/higher-order mode × two ambient configurations) passed with recording operator doubles, including the updated 11-input gradient return. An exact-method replay with an intentionally failing fixture reproduced the environment leak. These are bounded Python control-flow checks, not Torch/Triton or GPU execution. The author's reported 42 passes / 1 pre-existing skip are supplementary evidence; I did not rerun them. Seven substantive current-head Actions workflows are action_required and have not executed. The author's level-3 failures remain disclosed as pre-existing, not validated here. This incremental review does not supersede the other reviewer's broader consolidation/performance-contract requests.

[P2] Restore the configured levels after these tests

This unconditional pop (and the same loop in test_backward_retains_construction_level_across_env_restore at lines 2392–2393) permanently removes DP_TRITON_INFER and DP_TRITON_TRAIN from the process. This class has no environment-restoring setUp/tearDown or cleanup. When the suite is launched with nonzero levels, every subsequently constructed model in the same process sees the default level zero instead, silently changing which kernels later tests exercise; an assertion/fixture failure leaks the change too. The old tests restored their switch in finally, so this is new in the delta. Use a scoped mock.patch.dict/monkeypatch or addCleanup to restore the original environment on both success and failure. I reproduced the leak by invoking the exact new test method with initial levels 3/2 and an intentionally failing _inputs fixture.
