Hi, I'm Johannes. I'm Head of Operations at Prometis Lab, a spin-off of Ghent University and BNP Paribas Fortis, where I lead software development. In my own time I write cycling software that combines noisy sensor data and physics into live numbers to help you read the road ahead.
I studied physics, then did a PhD in economics at Ghent University on how households react to income changes. Most of that PhD went into the pipeline that turns raw pseudonymised bank transactions into a research-ready dataset, and that pipeline now runs at Prometis Lab every day. It's the kind of work I like most: a messy source of data, a model of what it measures, and software that others can build on.
Some things I've started:
- Barberfish: native-feeling data field enhancements for the Hammerhead Karoo, such as a steady live grade fitted over the last 30 m of road
- Godot: a gradient-aware cycling ETA estimator, in progress
- vanzelfsprekend: Matplotlib plots that speak for themselves, inspired by Tufte and Doumont
- Ghent Festive 500: free social rides with Ghent's cycling clubs between Christmas and New Year
