Router: drop received packets that carry our own node number - #12270
Every packet we transmit is recorded in PacketHistory when it is sent (NextHopRouter.cpp:117, FloodingRouter.cpp:23). An echo heard back off the mesh is therefore consumed by shouldFilterReceived(), which is where the implicit ACK fires and retransmissions stop.
A LoRa frame with our node number that the filter does not recognise is a different case: for example one of ours that has aged out of PacketHistory, or that was sent before a reboot. Today it is processed as new inbound traffic. It is dispatched to modules (MessageStore, the screen), and when it is addressed to us, MeshService::handleFromRadio forwards it to the client as a fresh packet. MQTT (MQTT.cpp:138) and UDP (UdpMulticastHandler.h:86) ingress already drop from == us, so LoRa is the odd one out.
Changes
Router::perhapsHandleReceived() drops a packet carrying our node number right aftershouldFilterReceived():
Recognised echoes are handled by the filter first, so the implicit ACK (ReliableRouter::perhapsGenerateImplicitAckForOwnOverheard) and the retransmission cancel are unchanged.
Anything with our number that gets past the filter is dropped before module dispatch and phone delivery.
The drop can't go at radio intake: that would discard recognised echoes too and break implicit ACKs.
FloodingRouter (from review): the first copy of such a frame still enters PacketHistory, so later copies take the dupe paths, which run before the drop.
reprocessPacket() now returns false for own-number packets. Before this, a repeat with hop_start == hop_limit was reprocessed as an originator retry: traceroute handling ran, and a want_ack frame to us got ACKed.
perhapsHandleUpgradedPacket() now consumes own-number copies outright. An "upgraded" copy with more hops left previously removed our own queued transmission from the TX queue. PacketHistory reports such a copy as seen, so merely skipping it would let it fall through to perhapsCancelDupe() when hop_start > hop_limit, which cancels it on a client.
Neither path is ever needed for our own packets: we never relay them, and their implicit ACK is generated earlier, in ReliableRouter::shouldFilterReceived().
Opaque-relay and decode-failure paths are unchanged. Both already handle isFromUs before this point.
Tests
New suite test_own_number_ingress, built on the existing AuthPipelineHarness with the real ReliableRouter → RoutingModule → MeshService path:
An unrecognised LoRa frame with from == to == us reaches neither module dispatch nor the phone.
An unrecognised broadcast with from == us doesn't reach module dispatch and isn't rebroadcast.
A repeated want_ack own-number frame (hop_start == hop_limit) isn't reprocessed or ACKed.
Upgraded own-number copies, both with hop_start == hop_limit and with hop_start > hop_limit, leave our queued packet in the TX queue.
Control: the same frame from another node still reaches modules and the phone.
Implicit ACK delivery (from review), for both a recognised echo of our own want_ack channel broadcast and an opaque echo of our own want_ack PKI DM (OPAQUE_RELAY_ONLY):
The retransmission is cleared.
The ACK goes through the real RoutingModule::sendAckNak() → Router::sendLocal() path.
The phone queue holds exactly one frame: a ROUTING_APP success ACK with the original request_id.
To support this, AuthPipelineRoutingModule gains a deliverAcks switch, which is off by default.
Verified both ways:
Without the Router drop, the first two own-number cases fail.
Without the FloodingRouter guards, the repeated and upgraded cases fail.
With the Router drop moved ahead of shouldFilterReceived(), the broadcast echo case fails (no implicit ACK).
Dropping isFromUs() at phone delivery (as in fixes #11466 #11487) fails both ACK-delivery cases.
Each case uses its own packet id, because PacketHistory outlives a test and a reused id would pass as a dupe.
test/state-manifest.tsv gets the new suite's entry (same NodeDB pref writes as test_hop_start_policy).
Full native run: RESULT: GREEN 89/89 suites passed, all CLEAN. The ACK-delivery commit is test-only; test_own_number_ingress and test_rebroadcast_mode, the two suites that use the harness, pass on it.

Not tested on hardware. Worth a quick on-device check that DMs and want_ack broadcasts still show "delivered to mesh" (implicit ACK from a neighbour's rebroadcast).
Packets identified as originating from the local node are no longer delivered to modules or the connected phone, whether addressed directly or broadcast.
Locally attributed packets are no longer reprocessed or used to replace queued rebroadcasts. Repeated copies do not trigger acknowledgments or remove packets from the transmit queue.
Packets from other nodes continue to be delivered normally. Recognized echoes can still trigger an implicit acknowledgment without appearing as incoming messages.

Walkthrough
Router ingress now drops accepted packets that identify the local node as sender. Flooding paths also exclude self-origin packets from upgraded-packet replacement and reprocessing. Guarded tests cover remote delivery, self-origin packet drops, and recognized echoes.

Explanation
The title "Router: drop received packets that carry our own node number" matches the main change. Router::perhapsHandleReceived() now drops packets whose sender is the local node number after shouldFilterReceived() accepts them. The FloodingRouter and test changes support this same behavior, so the title describes the primary change without listing files.

The description follows the repository template's main sections. It has a Summary, a Changes section, a Tests section, and the Attestations checklist. The author ticked the native-tests box and noted that hardware testing was not done, which is consistent with the template's guidance to indicate missing hardware testing. The device checkboxes remain unticked, and the description says the change was not tested on hardware. The template's tips section was removed, as the template instructs. The description explains the reasoning, the ordering choice, and the verification steps in detail. The description is complete enough for a reviewer.

Every packet we transmit is recorded in PacketHistory when it is sent, so
an echo heard back off the mesh is consumed by shouldFilterReceived():
the implicit ACK fires and retransmissions stop. A LoRa frame with our
number that the filter does not recognise (one of ours that has aged out
of PacketHistory, or that was sent before a reboot) was then processed as
new inbound traffic: dispatched to modules and, when addressed to us,
forwarded to the client as a fresh packet. MQTT and UDP ingress already
drop from == us.
Drop such packets in Router::perhapsHandleReceived() right after
shouldFilterReceived(), so recognised echoes keep their implicit ACK and
retransmission cancel.
test_own_number_ingress pushes frames through the real ingress path: an
unrecognised own-number frame to us and an unrecognised own-number
broadcast reach neither modules nor the phone; a frame from another node
still does; and a recognised echo of our own want_ack broadcast still
yields the implicit ACK and clears the pending retransmission. Without the
drop the two own-number cases fail; with the drop moved ahead of the
filter the echo case fails.

The first copy of an unrecognised own-number frame enters PacketHistory
before Router::perhapsHandleReceived() drops it, so a second copy takes
the dupe path. With hop_start == hop_limit that path reprocesses it as an
originator retry (traceroute handling, and an ACK for a want_ack frame to
us), and an "upgraded" copy with more hops removes our own queued
transmission from the TX queue.
Neither applies to our own packets: we never relay them, and their
implicit ACK is generated earlier in ReliableRouter::shouldFilterReceived.
reprocessPacket() now returns false for them, and
perhapsHandleUpgradedPacket() leaves them alone, so the upgraded copy
falls through to the own-number drop.
test_own_number_ingress adds a repeated want_ack own-number frame (must
not be ACKed) and an upgraded own-number copy (our queued packet must stay
queued). Both fail without the guards.

PacketHistory reports an upgraded copy as seen, so when
perhapsHandleUpgradedPacket() returned false for an own-number copy it
fell through to the ordinary dupe handling. With hop_start > hop_limit
that reached perhapsCancelDupe(), which on a client cancels our own queued
transmission. Return true for own-number copies instead, so they are
consumed without touching the TX queue.
test_own_number_ingress adds the hop_start > hop_limit upgrade case
(our queued packet must stay queued); it fails without this change.

The placement after shouldFilterReceived() looks right. Could we add a regression test that verifies the generated implicit ACK actually reaches the phone, including for an opaque PKI DM?
We’ve hit closely related problems before:
In #11487, filtering isFromUs() during phone delivery dropped implicit ACKs and locally generated NAKs/errors. 42e57f2 corrected that before merge and added coverage using the real RoutingModule.
#11502 fixed the regression where opaque PKI DM echoes bypassed implicit ACK generation while broadcast ACKs still worked.
The current harness overrides sendAckNak() to increment a counter, so the new test verifies the ACK request and pending retransmission cancellation without exercising ACK delivery to the phone.
Could the additional test originate a reliable packet, inject its rebroadcast, and use the real RoutingModule::sendAckNak() path to assert that a ROUTING_APP success ACK with the original request_id reaches the phone queue? Covering both a channel broadcast and an opaque PKI DM would protect the client’s “Delivered to mesh” notification against those earlier failure modes.
The echo case only counted the ACK request through the harness's stub
sendAckNak(). AuthPipelineRoutingModule gains a deliverAcks switch that
also runs the real RoutingModule::sendAckNak(), so the ACK travels
Router::sendLocal() -> RoutingModule -> MeshService to the phone queue.
- The broadcast echo case now requires exactly one frame on the phone: a
ROUTING_APP success ACK carrying the original request_id.
- New case: an opaque echo of our own want_ack PKI DM (unknown channel
hash, OPAQUE_RELAY_ONLY) must cancel the retransmission and deliver the
same ACK.
Filtering our number at phone delivery (as in #11487) fails both;
skipping the opaque implicit ACK (as in #11502) fails the PKI DM case.
The switch is off by default and cleared on reset, so
test_rebroadcast_mode is unaffected.

AuthPipelineRoutingModule now has a deliverAcks switch. When it's set, the stub also runs the real RoutingModule::sendAckNak(), so the ACK travels Router::sendLocal() → RoutingModule → MeshService::handleFromRadio() to the phone queue. It's off by default and cleared in reset(), so test_rebroadcast_mode is unchanged.
Channel broadcast: we originate a want_ack broadcast (in PacketHistory, pending retransmission) and inject its rebroadcast. The phone queue must hold exactly one frame: a ROUTING_APP success ACK carrying the original request_id. The echo itself must not show up, and the retransmission must be cleared.
Opaque PKI DM: we originate a want_ack DM, then inject its overheard copy as ciphertext on a channel hash we hold no key for, which takes the OPAQUE_RELAY_ONLY branch. Same assertions.
Checked against both earlier failure modes:
Dropping isFromUs() at phone delivery (the fixes #11466 #11487 shape) fails both cases: Expected 1 Was 0.
