This is an automated cherry-pick of #5893

What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6021

What is changed and how it works?

Removes unnecessary buffering in the log puller. Span cleanup is moved from the dynamic-stream event handler to the failure handler’s run loop, avoiding re-entrant calls and potential deadlocks. Tests are updated for the asynchronous cleanup flow.

Check List

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved region failure handling by queuing drained spans for orderly processing alongside cached region errors.
    • Updated stream buffering behavior to use the default configuration, reducing the risk of deadlocks.
    • Ensured canceled subscriptions remain tracked until failure processing completes.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for queued cancellation handling and failure-handler shutdown.
    • Updated scheduler tests to verify proper cleanup when the operation is canceled.

📝 Walkthrough

The failure handler now queues drained spans and processes them in its run loop. The dynamic stream no longer explicitly enables buffering. Tests verify deferred cleanup and handler cancellation.

Changes: Deferred span cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queue and process drained spans
logservice/logpuller/region_failure_handler.go, logservice/logpuller/region_event_sink.go, logservice/logpuller/region_request_scheduler_test.go, logservice/logpuller/subscription_client_test.go
errCache stores drained spans separately from region errors. Report queues spans, and Run processes them before cached errors. The event sink no longer explicitly enables buffering. Tests verify deferred cleanup and cancellation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 21bf8

Stopping many subscriptions can delay recovery for active subscriptions. Bound and interleave cleanup work before merging unless that delay is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 21bf8

The change removes a re-entrant cleanup path, but queued cleanup can be skipped during termination. The identified concern is limited to retained in-memory state; no expanded external access or additional privileges were established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Deferred cleanup has no terminal handoff. A final Report can enqueue a drained span before cancellation or a fatal Run exit, leaving its registry entry and queued reference unconsumed. The base performed that cleanup synchronously. Close clears stream paths but does not clear the span registry or drained-span queue, so a retained client can retain stopped-subscription state after shutdown. This does not establish continued remote access or a persistent security exposure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed queue and cleanup consumer are shared by subscriptions attached to one client, so cleanup delays can affect that client's other recovery work. The inspected evidence does not establish cross-client, cross-tenant, or deployment-wide propagation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The cleanup target remains an existing subscribedSpan carried through region ownership, rather than a newly accepted external cleanup identifier. UnlockRange validates the locked region identity, version, and range before returning; event-error handling reports removal only when the state transition permits it.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Terminal containment is broader than per-span cleanup: a failure-handler error cancels sibling client tasks through their shared error group. Close is documented to follow Run and closes the event sink and scheduler; dynamic-stream Close clears its path map and cancels and joins its streams. These controls limit the terminal queue concern, but do not empty the retained span registry or drained-span queue.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Bound drained-span work before processing region errors.

When many subscriptions stop together, popDrainedSpans can return a large backlog. Run calls onTableDrained for every span before it handles any cached region error. Because onTableDrained calls RemovePath synchronously, a bulk stop can delay recovery for active subscriptions. Process drained spans in bounded batches and interleave them with cached errors.
