Problem

An agent cannot choose the model for a scheduled task over MCP (#16833). schedule_task always copies the calling thread's selection, update_scheduled_task always keeps the stored one, and the task summary does not show either. The input structs are not strict, so an agent that passes modelSelection gets a success response while the field is dropped.

Example: a thread on a large model wants to create a webhook triage task that runs on a small one. Today the task has to be created from a thread that is already on the small model, or edited in the app afterwards.

The scheduler already stores and runs a full selection per task. Only the MCP surface is missing it.

Change

This follows the fix proposed in the issue's triage comment.

  • schedule_task and update_scheduled_task take an optional target (OrchestratorMcpTarget, the field delegate_task and create_threads take). It goes through the existing resolveTarget, so it gets the same checks: registered provider with an adapter, advertised model, valid options, one re-probe of an unavailable provider. It is also refused when the project has the provider turned off.
  • Create resolves against the calling thread's selection, or the project default when there is no calling thread. Update resolves against the task's stored selection, so target: { options } keeps the stored provider and model. As with the other tools, options carry over only when provider and model are unchanged.
  • No target behaves exactly as before, and does not consult the provider registry.
  • The scheduled task summary (schedule_task, update_scheduled_task, list_scheduled_tasks) adds providerInstanceId, model, options, runtimeMode, and interactionMode.
  • The three tool descriptions are updated, including that the inherited settings are a one-time copy.

resolveTarget's parent parameter is narrowed to the two thread fields it reads (projectId, modelSelection) so it can be called without a thread. Existing callers are unchanged.

Not included:

  • Setting runtime or interaction mode over MCP. Those need the escalation checks the edit path already guards, so they are a separate change. A task's runtime mode is also not stepped down when the target provider does not offer it.
  • Rejecting unknown input keys (listed as optional in the issue).
  • A task bound to a thread sends each run with its stored selection, which is existing behaviour. fix(server): thread-bound scheduled tasks run on the thread's current provider #18467 proposes changing that; if it lands, target would only matter for tasks that launch a fresh thread.

Scope and approval

Fixes #16833, labelled bug and via-triage. The triage comment confirms the failure on main and proposes this design: #16833 (comment)

I searched open and closed PRs and issues for scheduled-task model selection and found no PR for this. #16592 adds the same controls to the web editor and does not touch MCP.

Verification

New tests in apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts ("scheduled task targets") call the service with a mocked scheduler and assert the selection that gets saved:

  • schedule_task without target saves the caller's selection with its options; with target: { model } it saves the target model without the caller's options, and the result reports it.
  • update_scheduled_task without target saves the stored selection; target: { model } changes the model; target: { options } keeps provider and model.
  • An unadvertised model fails with model_unavailable and a provider the project turned off fails with invalid_request; nothing is saved in either case.

Ran:

  • vp test run apps/server/src/mcp: 26 files, 291 tests passed.
  • vp test run packages/shared/src/t3McpToolPresentation.test.ts: passed.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit in packages/contracts and apps/server: exit 0.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on the four changed files: clean.

Not checked: I did not run a dev server or call the tools from a live agent, and did not run the repo-wide suite.

schedule_task and update_scheduled_task take an optional target, resolved
the same way as delegate_task's. Scheduled task summaries now report the
provider, model, options, and modes a task runs with.

📝 Walkthrough

MCP scheduled-task creation and updates now accept an optional provider and model target. Scheduled-task results include provider, model, options, runtime mode, and interaction mode. Tests cover inherited and explicit selections, updates, and target resolution failures.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 00465

Clarify when scheduled-task options are retained so consumers are not misled about updates. No unresolved model-selection defect remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 00465

Scheduled tasks gain explicit destination selection while retaining existing project and permission checks. No permission bypass was established in the reviewed paths, but downstream isolation and client compatibility were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new authority is durable provider-destination selection for tasks the caller can already create or update, affecting subsequent runs rather than only the current invocation. Task prompts can reach a different configured, project-enabled provider. The inspected boundary does not establish downstream credential isolation or a tenant-wide exposure limit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The target adds no project or permission-mode override. Existing create/write access wrappers remain, updates check caller ceilings and cross-project access, and explicit targets must pass provider resolution and project enablement before persistence.
  • observed — Both execution branches retain provider-enablement enforcement: fresh-thread launch checks the selected instance, while central message dispatch checks the selected instance against the bound thread's project.

Preserve the stored model on a provider-only update.

When existing.modelSelection stores gpt-5.4 and target changes only the provider, resolveTarget selects provider.models[0] because the provider instance differs and target.model is omitted. This can change the task to another model even when the new provider advertises gpt-5.4. Preserve the stored model when the new provider supports it, and return an explicit model_unavailable error when it does not.

The update test's scheduler mock now keeps the last saved selection, so an
options-only update is checked against the retargeted model. The tool
descriptions say where the runtime mode comes from without a calling thread,
and that naming a different provider without a model picks that provider's
first model.

Clarify when omitted options are retained.

This comment says omitted fields keep their stored values when the provider stays the same. That overstates options inheritance: options reset when only the model changes. apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/orchestrator/tools.ts, Line 146, states this exception. Specify that omitted options are retained only when both the provider and model stay the same.
