… provider A scheduled task bound to a thread passed the model selection it was created with on every run, so a thread the user had switched to another provider was dragged back to the old one each time the task fired. Leave the selection out for thread-bound runs so they use whatever provider and model the thread is on now. Refs pingdotgg#17932
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped server bug fix that makes thread-bound scheduled runs follow the thread’s current provider and model while preserving behavior for tasks that launch new threads. The accompanying tests cover provider and same-provider account switches, with no schema, deployment, security, or static-analysis changes. Notes:

Thanks for this, @otavio. We run a fork with several recurring tasks bound to long threads on Windows, hit the same thing, and made the same one-argument change independently on 11 Oct (
One thing we saw that your description does not mention: because the stored selection carries the provider instance, the old behaviour also moved a thread back to another account of the same provider, not only to another provider. Since no selection is sent at all any more, that case should go away with it; your test covers the provider switch, we did not write a test for the same-provider account case. Not checked on our side: a scheduled run that steers a turn already in progress, webhook tasks, and mobile. Posted by Claude (Opus 5.5, Claude Code via T3 Code) on behalf of @AdEx-Partners-DE. |

@AdEx-Partners-DE thanks for the feedback, and for checking the test against your own version of the change on Windows. It's good to know two separate fixes ended up with the same behavior. You're right about the account case. The stored selection names a provider instance, so the old code also moved a thread back to another account of the same provider. I added a second case to the test in 0d13876: it switches the thread to another Codex instance ( |

Problem
A scheduled task bound to a thread (created with
schedule_taskandbindToCurrentThread: true) keeps running on the provider it was created under after the user switches the thread to another provider. Every run hands the thread back to the old provider. In #17932, a task created on Codex kept firing on Codex, which had hit its usage limit, for hours after the thread moved to Claude.Change
For thread-bound runs,
ScheduledTaskServicepassed the task's storedmodelSelectiontoThreadManagementService.sendToThread. The orchestrator uses the command's selection ahead of the thread's own (command.modelSelection ?? projection.thread.modelSelection), so the old selection won on every run. Thread-bound runs now leavemodelSelectionout, so they run on the thread's current provider and model. Tasks that launch a new thread on each run still use their stored selection. Because the stored selection names a provider instance, the old behavior also moved a thread back to another account of the same provider, not only to another provider. That case is fixed by the same change.Out of scope, since other open PRs cover the rest of #17932:
lastRunStatusreportingsucceededfor failed runs: fix(server): scheduled runs record the turn's real outcome #18213parent_not_activeafter the provider switch: fix(server): T3 tools work again after a thread switches back to a reused provider session #17096Behavior note: the Settings model picker (web and mobile) still appears when editing an existing thread-bound task, but thread-bound runs now ignore that selection. Settings cannot create thread-bound tasks; only agents create them through
schedule_task. I left the picker as is to keep this PR to one problem.Scope and approval
Fixes the provider-pinning part of #17932, which is a bug report. This qualifies as a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug: a thread-bound task should run on the thread the user is using, and the fix removes one argument so the thread's existing selection applies. It changes no contracts, schemas, or clients.
Verification
mainfirst. I added a focused test toapps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts, using the realScheduledTaskService,ThreadLaunchService, andThreadManagementServiceon in-memory SQLite. The test launches a Codex thread, creates a task bound to it with the Codex selection, switches the thread to Claude withthread.model-selection.set, and runs the task withrunNow. Onmainit failed: the scheduled message's run used{ instanceId: "codex", model: "gpt-5.1-codex" }instead of Claude.{ instanceId: "claudeAgent", model: "claude-opus-5-5" }, and the test passes.codex_work), standing in for a second account of the same provider. It also fails with the old argument restored and passes with the fix.vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadLaunchService.test.ts apps/server/src/scheduledTasks: 8 files, 126 tests passed. After adding the same-provider case,ThreadLaunchService.test.tsalone: 64 tests passed.vp test runon the other suites that touch scheduled tasks (storageCleanup,OrchestratorMcpToolkit.integration,ClaudeAutomaticDelivery.integration,Scheduler.integration): 4 files, 63 tests passed.vpr typecheckinapps/serverpasses.vp lintandvp fmt --checkon the touched files are clean apart from one warning atThreadLaunchService.test.ts:2344, which was already there.runNow, and webhook runs all use this path, that the enabled-provider check falls back to the thread's selection when none is passed, and that replaying a command with the same id does not dispatch again. Not checked: I did not run a live provider. The test disables provider execution, so it shows which provider and model the run is dispatched to, not a real provider turn. I also did not reproduce the usage-limit scenario end to end.
