For a normal
pull_requestrun,workflow_run.head_shacan be the merge SHA. The open PR's.head.shais the source-branch SHA, so the extra comparison can return no PR. The workflow then passes an emptyoverride_prto Codecov. This can leave the upload without explicit PR association.Suggested fix

The coverage report uses the synthetic pull-request merge checkout.

Minor: Coverage retries cannot produce a handoff. A failed-jobs retry reruns this dependent coverage job under the same run ID. Its existing coverage-report artifact makes the v4 upload fail, so this output becomes false even when all retried lanes pass. Codecov therefore receives nothing, contrary to the documented retry behavior.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This doesn't happen: this PR's own run shows a retry producing a handoff. In run 36667187707, attempt 1 failed only Unit tests (11). "Re-run failed jobs" then re-ran it together with the jobs that depend on it:
- "Coverage report" re-ran at 04:46 UTC. Its
coverage-reportupload succeeded, so the run now has two artifacts with that name: one from attempt 1 (04:24) and one from attempt 2 (04:49). succeededwas true, and "Hand coverage over to Codecov" producedcodecov-jacocoat 04:49.
So upload-artifact v4's name conflict applies within a single attempt, not across attempts of the same run. I'm leaving the code as it is.

Welcome to Codecov 🎉Once you merge this PR into your default branch, you're all set! Codecov will compare coverage reports and display results in all future pull requests. Thanks for integrating Codecov - We've got you covered ☂️ |
The Coverage report job aggregates the JDK 17 unit and integration lanes into jacoco.xml and archives it as a workflow artifact, which records the number without reporting it: no per-pull-request delta, no line-level annotation on the diff, and no history to compare a branch against. Upload that jacoco.xml to Codecov, with the CODECOV_TOKEN repository secret, from a job of its own after the report job. The report job runs even when a lane failed and keeps what the lanes left as its artifact, which is right for diagnosis but wrong as a Codecov baseline: a partial report on scylla-4.x becomes what target: auto compares the next pull request against. So the upload job runs only when every unit, Cassandra and Scylla lane passed and the report job built and archived the report; the report job's continue-on-error makes it look successful to the jobs that need it either way, so it exposes that as an output. needs cannot tell a matrix's legs apart, so a failed JDK 11 leg, which records no coverage, holds the upload back as well. The upload is not in the report job itself because that job's continue-on-error would swallow a refused upload. Pull requests from forks, which is most of them here, get no repository secrets, so their upload goes without a token, which Codecov accepts for public repositories unless the organization's Codecov settings require one; Dependabot-triggered runs get no CODECOV_TOKEN either. An upload error fails the job everywhere except those two cases. Codecov files a pull request's report under its head commit. codecov.yml carries what the action cannot express: - No path fixes: each package/sourcefile pair in jacoco.xml names exactly one file of the repository. - require_ci_to_pass: false and notify.wait_for_ci: false, so the report is neither withheld because an unrelated check failed nor held back while one is still running. - max_report_age: false. By default Codecov discards a JaCoCo report whose oldest session is from before noon the previous day. "Re-run failed jobs" reuses the lanes that passed, so a re-run after a weekend would be discarded, while the report is only ever built from the run's own lanes. - Informational project and patch statuses. The integration suites run against live Scylla and Cassandra clusters, and which lines they reach depends on cluster timing as well as on the diff. Also add a Codecov badge to README.md and mention the upload in the coverage section of README-dev.md. Restore the per-lane execution data check that scylladb#1162's rewrite dropped, so a lane passing without agent data no longer uploads a partial baseline. Skip the upload outside scylladb/java-driver, count JaCoCo partials as hits to match the job summary, turn off the CLI's non-Java plugins and fix the stale job name in codecov.yml. Uploads the `lcov.info` that the coverage workflow already produces to Codecov. PRs get a coverage delta and line annotations, and `main` gets a coverage history. Codecov's statuses are informational, so they never block a merge. ## What changes - **`.github/workflows/coverage.yml`**: a new `codecov` job that downloads the `coverage-report` artifact and uploads `lcov.info` with `codecov/codecov-action`, using the `CODECOV_TOKEN` repository secret. - **Re-runnable.** A Codecov or network error can be retried by re-running this job alone, without repeating the cluster and test run. - **Only passing runs upload.** The job `needs` the coverage job, so it runs only when every coverage step passed. A failed run still writes a partial report, and on `main` that would become the baseline later PRs are compared against. - **Fork PRs** get no repository secrets, so they upload without a token. **Dependabot** runs don't get the token either. In those two cases a refused upload doesn't fail the job; everywhere else it does. - **`codecov.yml`**: `require_ci_to_pass: false` and `notify.wait_for_ci: false`, since this is the only uploader. The project and patch statuses are informational. No path fixes are needed: Codecov's default matching maps `lcov.info`'s absolute paths onto the repository. - **`README.md`**: a Codecov badge. scylladb/java-driver#1162 uses the same separate upload job, and scylladb/python-driver#1052 the same Codecov setup. This replaces the earlier version of this PR, which uploaded from a separate `workflow_run` workflow backed by a helper script and its tests. Prerequisites: the `CODECOV_TOKEN` repository secret (already set), and the repository enabled on Codecov with the Codecov GitHub App installed. ## Upload security The scylladb org's Codecov settings require a token for uploads to public repositories. The one exception is a tokenless upload whose branch has the fork form `owner:branch`, which is what the action sends for fork PRs. - **`main` and other branches of this repository** upload with `CODECOV_TOKEN`, and a tokenless upload for them is refused, so their coverage can't be faked. - **Fork PR reports** can be spoofed by anyone, but they only feed that PR's informational statuses and comment, never `main`'s history or the badge. ## Pre-review checklist - [x] I have split my patch into logically separate commits. - [x] All commit messages clearly explain what they change and why. - [ ] I added relevant tests for new features and bug fixes. The "Coverage report" job aggregates the JDK 17 unit and integration lanes into
jacoco.xml, but it only archives the result as a workflow artifact. PRs get no coverage delta and no line-level annotation, and there's no history to compare against. This PR uploads thatjacoco.xmlto Codecov using theCODECOV_TOKENrepository secret. The same change is in scylladb/python-driver#1052 and scylladb/scylla-rust-driver#1940, following scylladb/gocql#1089.
Changes
.github/workflows/tests@v1.yml: a new "Upload coverage to Codecov" job after "Coverage report". It checks out the source, downloads thecoverage-reportartifact, and uploadsjacoco.xmlwithcodecov/codecov-action.scylla-4.xwould become whattarget: autocompares later PRs against. So the upload job runs only when every unit, Cassandra and Scylla lane passed and the report was built and archived.needscan't tell a matrix's legs apart, so a failed JDK 11 leg, which records no coverage, also holds the upload back.continue-on-error, which would swallow a refused upload. That same setting makes the job look successful to jobs that depend on it, so it now exposes abuiltoutput from its aggregate and artifact steps for the upload job to check.codecov.yml(new):require_ci_to_pass: falseandnotify.wait_for_ci: false, so an unrelated failing check such as Full verify doesn't withhold the report.max_report_age: false. By default Codecov discards a JaCoCo report whose oldest session is from before noon the previous day. "Re-run failed jobs" reuses the lanes that passed, so a re-run after a weekend would be discarded.projectandpatchstatuses (target: auto, threshold: 1%).README.md: a Codecov badge.README-dev.md: a short note on the upload in the coverage section. This replaces the earlier version of this PR, which uploaded from a separate
workflow_runworkflow. That design could only upload after merge and never from this PR, and it needed a lot of plumbing to do so.Verification
