The existing Central configuration returns after validation, so automatic publication can still be running when the driver pushes SCM changes. Dry-run bundles also disappear with the runner, leaving no signature or module audit and requiring manual deployment cleanup.

Always upload in manual mode. Verify every bundle signature against the pinned publisher certificate and require the exact reactor module set, version, and namespace before publishing. Real releases wait for Central's PUBLISHED state before SCM changes; dry runs delete the verified unpublished deployment and retain its bundle and report. Keep the exact signed commits and tag in a recovery bundle for failures after publication, and serialize each release branch independently.

Upload in manual mode, check every artifact signature and the exact reactor
module set, then publish through the Portal API and wait for completion.
Delete verified dry-run deployments and retain public bundles and reports.

Retain the exact prepared Git history for partial-release recovery. Serialize
releases per branch so both driver lines can validate independently.

📝 Walkthrough

Release targets now disable Maven auto-publication and use a helper to verify Central bundles and manage deployment publication or dry-run deletion. The workflow creates a recovery bundle and uploads release artifacts. Release documentation and tests cover the updated publication and recovery steps.

🐞 Bugs (5) 🔗 Cross-repo conflicts (1)

🔴 High

1. Publishing can skip Central's module check 🐞 Bug
Description
finish compares Central's purls with the expected components only when the response supplies a
truthy value. If a VALIDATED response omits purls or returns an empty list, the helper proceeds
to publish or delete without establishing that Central's components match the verified bundle.
Code

scripts/release/publication.py[R175-176]

+    if status.get('purls') and set(status['purls']) != expected_purls:
+ raise Invalid('Central components do not match the verified bundle.')
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
An absent or empty Central component list bypasses the identity comparison.

## Fix Focus Areas
- scripts/release/publication.py[173-183]

## Recommended Fix
Require `purls` to be present and to equal the expected set before either publication or deletion; reject missing, empty, or malformed component data.

2. Valid deployment IDs can halt releases 🐞 Bug
Description
deployment_id lowercases the UUID found in Maven output, but wait_for compares Central's
returned UUID without normalizing it. A response using uppercase hexadecimal for the same UUID fails
the identity check, stopping publication or dry-run cleanup.
Code

scripts/release/publication.py[R150-151]

+        if not isinstance(status, dict) or status.get('deploymentId') != identifier:
+ raise Invalid('Central returned an unexpected deployment identity.')
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Equivalent UUIDs fail the deployment identity check when their hexadecimal casing differs.

## Fix Focus Areas
- scripts/release/publication.py[80-89]
- scripts/release/publication.py[149-151]

## Recommended Fix
Validate the response identifier as a UUID and compare normalized values. Add a status-response test with uppercase hexadecimal.

3. An accepted publication can go unreported 🐞 Bug
Description
finish writes publication-report.log only after the publish request and subsequent status
polling have both succeeded. If Central accepts the request but a later response or poll fails, the
run exits without a report recording the attempted operation and deployment ID, leaving recovery
dependent on a separate Portal inspection.
Code

scripts/release/publication.py[R177-180]

+    if mode == 'publish':
+ api('POST', 'deployment/' + identifier)
+ wait_for(identifier, 'PUBLISHED')
+ outcome = 'published'
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A post-request failure prevents the publication report from recording an operation Central may have accepted.

## Fix Focus Areas
- scripts/release/publication.py[173-190]

## Recommended Fix
Persist a report with the verified deployment ID and intended operation before the publish or delete request. Update its outcome only after confirmation, retaining an explicit unconfirmed state on failure.

4. Consumers can receive POM-only versions 🔗 Cross-repo conflict
Description
verify_bundle requires a signed POM for each expected module but does not require the unclassified
JAR for modules that produce one. If a bundle lacks java-driver-core.jar or
java-driver-core-shaded.jar, it can still proceed to publication, leaving Maven consumers in
kafka-connect-scylladb, spark-scylladb-connector, and cassandra-stress unable to resolve that
version.
Code

scripts/release/publication.py[R121-124]

+ # Each component must include a signed POM, even if its packaging is pom.
+ for module in modules:
+ if f'com/scylladb/{module}/{version}/{module}-{version}.pom' not in payloads:
+ raise Invalid('A bundle component is missing its POM.')
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The bundle verifier accepts signed POMs without the unclassified JARs required by downstream Maven consumers.

## Fix Focus Areas
- scripts/release/publication.py[35-59]
- scripts/release/publication.py[119-125]
- scripts/release/test_publication.py[65-88]

## Recommended Fix
Derive each included reactor module’s packaging from its POM and require its exact unclassified primary JAR in the verified bundle when that packaging produces one. Keep POM-only modules exempt, and add a test that removes a required JAR and its signature.

5. Failed runs lose their Central bundle 🐞 Bug
Description
The workflow uploads central-bundle.zip only for a successful dry run, and its always-uploaded
recovery artifact does not include that file. If Maven exits after creating or uploading a
deployment, or verification fails before completion, neither release mode retains the exact bundle
needed to inspect what was staged.
Code

.github/workflows/release.yml[R221-226]

+ - name: Upload verified dry-run bundle
+        if: inputs.dry-run == true && success()
+ uses: actions/upload-artifact@ea165f8d65b6e75b540449e92b4886f43607fa02 # v4.6.2
+ with:
+ name: verified-central-bundle
+ path: target/checkout/**/target/central-publishing/central-bundle.zip
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A failed release can leave a Central deployment while the workflow discards its local bundle.

## Fix Focus Areas
- .github/workflows/release.yml[221-241]
- Makefile[368-382]

## Recommended Fix
Add an always-running artifact upload for any generated Central bundle, with a distinct name or clear verification status. Keep the success-only artifact if it is intended to mean verified.

6. A brief Central error after publishing strands the release 🐞 Bug
Description
After finish() sends the publish request (api('POST', 'deployment/' + id)),
wait_for(identifier, 'PUBLISHED') polls through api() with no retry: one HTTP 5xx/429,
URLError, or 60 s socket timeout escapes and fails the job, and the hard 1800 s WAIT_SECONDS
limit does the same if Central is slow. Central keeps publishing the immutable artifacts, but the
make release step fails, so the job skips the SCM push and docs, and main() prints only the
generic 'values withheld' message, which doesn't say whether the publish request itself got through.
Code

scripts/release/publication.py[R177-179]

+    if mode == 'publish':
+ api('POST', 'deployment/' + identifier)
+ wait_for(identifier, 'PUBLISHED')
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Once `finish()` has sent the publish request, any temporary Central/API error or the 30-minute limit fails the release. The artifacts still get published, but the SCM push and docs are skipped, and the logs don't say whether publication was requested.

## Fix Focus Areas
- scripts/release/publication.py[133-161]
- scripts/release/publication.py[177-180]
- scripts/release/publication.py[203-207]

## Recommended Fix
In `wait_for`, catch `urllib.error.URLError`, `TimeoutError`/`socket.timeout`, and `urllib.error.HTTPError` with status 429 or >= 500 around the `api('POST', 'status?id=...')` call. Retry them with backoff until the deadline, and keep raising on 4xx and on identity or state errors. Raise `WAIT_SECONDS` for the PUBLISHED wait (or make it configurable). Before polling, print a clear message that the publish request was accepted, including the deployment ID, so a later failure makes clear that publication may already be in progress. Also, in `main()`, log the exception class name in the generic branch.

A transient Central error during status polling aborts the release after publication.

wait_for does not catch urllib.error.URLError, TimeoutError, or HTTP 5xx errors. The module imports urllib.error but never uses it. One failed poll in the 30-minute window raises out of finish.

If this happens after the POST deployment/ request, Central publishes the release and the workflow skips the SCM push. That leaves a half-finished release that needs manual recovery.

Retry status polls on transient errors within the deadline. Do not retry the POST and DELETE calls.

Skip PublicationTests when GnuPG or Git is missing.

PublicationTests.setUpClass() directly invokes SigningTests.setUpClass(), so SigningTests's @unittest.skipUnless does not apply. The fixture can then error instead of skipping during the documented discovery run.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

check_policy misses autoPublish set outside the plugin's top-level configuration.

findtext("m:configuration/m:autoPublish") reads only the plugin-level configuration. An <executions><execution><configuration><autoPublish>true</autoPublish> block overrides that value and passes this check. Central then publishes at upload, before publication.py verifies the bundle. -Drelease.autopublish=false cannot override a literal true.

The bestPractices check above already scans .// for this reason. Apply the same scan here, and strip the text before comparing.
